Last year my acanthus leaves were covered in powdery mildew, which I treated, but it didnít flower.
What is annoying is that thereís an acanthus plant nearby that gets zero attention, and yet it blooms abundantly every year.
But this year......yippee, mine is statuesque, strong and flowering.

Its name is derived from the Greek word akanthos, meaning thorn or prickle, which you will understand if youíve ever brushed up against one.
Itís often called by the fanciful name of Bearís Breeches because of the size and appearance of the leaves which are big, broad, and hairy.
This is the plant said to have the leaves used as ornament on Corinthian columns with a large flower spike.

4 versions incuding a close-up.

Mine produce so many leaves I have to cut them off, but the spires of flowers are so tall, I cannot get near them. Well done for getting the whole spire in! Well presented too.
