Adhuc Dulce et decorum est pro patria mori.

The translation may or may not be spot-on, but the sentiment of Wilfred Owens' poem remains as powerful as ever.

Respirator cleaning time again, I decided on the spur of the moment to revisit a shot I uploaded a few years ago, and attempt to improve on the fairly rudimentary editing I used back then to achieve the desired effect. Since then Syrian civilians have been bombarded with sarin; it was sobering to see seriously ill and dying people on the television news no longer in control of their muscles as their limbs twitched involuntarily.

I won't quote the entire poem here but here are some of the most evocative lines and phrases:

But someone still was yelling out and stumbling,
And flound'ring like a man in fire or lime...

As under a green sea, I saw him drowning.
In all my dreams, before my helpless sight,
He plunges at me, guttering, choking, drowning.

If in some smothering dreams...

And watch the white eyes writhing in his face,
His hanging face, like a devil's sick of sin;

If you could hear, at every jolt, the blood
Come gargling from the froth-corrupted lungs,
Obscene as cancer...

Did I succeed in improving on my previous attempt?

Editing mostly consisted of selecting the white soap suds and adjusting the colour balance to turn them red, then a curves adjustment and fiddling with the opacity of a duplicate layer and the Multiply blending mode. Sounds simple but I still took ages to do it! And this time, I thought I'd dispense with the Adult tag I put on the last one (but I'll happily accept it if a mod feels differently).

Comments & critique welcome, as always.
