Air Loop

By MattB
One from my trip to Holmepierre Pont today, the National Watersports centre. After a few runs in my boat I took a ton of images. With the European freestyle championships taking place here next weekend, people were throwing down hard and the standard was high.

For those that wonder how this guy got up there, this is a move called a Loop, or in this case, an AIR Loop because he has the boat all the way out of the water. You do it by surfing a standing wave facing up stream and then drive the bow if the boat into the oncoming water and the bouancy of the boat forces you up and then by doing a forward throw of the body, the boat comes all the way round and lands facing up stream again. This guy is effectively going anti clockwise here.

All comments and questions welcomed, I dont normally shoot much fast action but i thought I would start with something I understand.

Thanks for looking

although the action is sharp, the whole image is busy and not well isolated. It's always a problem in sports photography when you get a bystander or in this case a waiting competitor who has eye contact with the camera and therefore drags the attention away from the intended subject. It's just natural that we lock onto a returned gaze.

It's still a pretty good action shot. I like it.

I couldn't tell what it was from the thumbnail. A great action shot, you've really captured the roughness of the water.

Very good action shot. I find it quite a feat flipping the kayack the way he is doing. Great story.

@ keith, thanks for taking the time to give some honest opinion. i ummd and aahd about including other boaters in the shot and I took many without but I posted this one with another in shot to give a sense of gravity to the image. I just thought people would have seen it as being upside down!

@ Lukey B - It was rammed due to the Euro cup next weekend. Youhave to wear a bib regardless, part of the draconian and expensive operation they have there.

@ everyone else - Thanks for the comments, glad you liked it!

Good action shot, do you use continuous shooting to get the full loop? I took some earlier in the year, a bit less busy and the paddler was very aware of the camera which helped.
