Air Transport Auxiliary

By Jasper87
North Weald airfield again. This is Kira, one of the re-enactors wearing the uniform of the ATA.

Wikipedia - "The Air Transport Auxiliary (ATA) was a British civilian organisation set up during the Second World War and headquartered at White Waltham Airfield that ferried new, repaired and damaged military aircraft between factories, assembly plants, transatlantic delivery points, maintenance units (MUs), scrap yards, and active service squadrons and airfields, but not to naval aircraft carriers. It also flew service personnel on urgent duty from one place to another and performed some air ambulance work. Notably, some of its pilots were women, and from 1943 they received equal pay to their male co-workers, a first for the British government."

The ATA members are a very much unsung, underestimated contribution to the war effort.

Great use of depth of field in this fine portrait.

The ATA women pilots were groundbreaking war sheros.

This is a very good pic. and I wish it were mine. It would be even better had you taken a half-step to the right so the head masked out whatever is sticking up from the aircraft, and bring her face closer to the out-of-focus pilot thereby unifying these two important people. It would also have given more of the front end of the aircraft. But still an image to be pleased and proud of.

A fine portrait, Dave, good use of depth of field, the plane (pun intended!) background providing extra interest. I have a sheepskin flying jacket similar to this that I bought many years ago, and it's extremely warm in cold weather - trouble is, I've expanded a bit around the middle and it's now too tight to zip up! 😦
In answer to your question on my 'Intra Market' upload, I didn't buy one of the hats, I already had one on - my Tilley hat, which keeps the sun off my face in sunny weather and my head dry if it's raining! 😁

Excellent Dave. Often the girls would put their make up on immediately after landing.
