Aladdin Sane

By DaveRyder
In the alleyway behind yesterdays 'New Alma' image is this piece of wall art, commissioned in summer 2020.
When pubs and bars were allowed to reopen with outdoor service a Church Street bar, 'Idols', used the back alley as a seating area and had this done to brighten the location.

The art work is by a Newcastle spray paint artist Toby whose other work in the area will provide more images over this week.

The most amazing thing, it hasn't been vandalised.

Definitely full colour only for this one.

Art and context. Thanks for the guy's name, I think he was responsible for similar work in the old arches behind the Sage Gateshead a few years ago.

If people feel attached to the art they tend not to deface it. I would think because it is where and what it is it may remain safe. On your version somebody has had a go at the blacked out windows but left the image alone.

I really like the version with the shot of the alley and bin etc. It shows the more staid street architecture against the gritty back street. Think they both would stand B/W too Dave.

Look forward to the series and putting down an award as a deposit on the rest!

I am wondering if the sort of person who just strays paint on walls, writes "dirty" words or anti-anything slogans as an act of defying The Establishment may not be in awe of those with the talent to do it so much better. Street art grew out of graffiti and often makes a profound, often anti-establishment statement.

And what better icon for them to idolize then this guy.
