A nice shot. I would be inclined to have more space on the left rather than right, - and not as much. The long white frame, doesnt work for me, - it places the subject further from a third which can make for a better composition.

Thanks Willie, for taking the time to make a suggestion. The shot was intentionally framed, as one of the things I was considering when I took it was the way in which older people such as Alan, who are still clearly vital and alive and have something to offer, are pushed to the side (it was a camera club night, and it's probably fair to say that most of the attention was on the two teenage girls who had also agreed to sit for us!). Nonetheless, I'm definitely going to have a play with different crops and see if I can improve the image.
