ALAS POOR YORICK......

By hobbo
Hardly anyone realises that this is a very common object in gardens all over the UK at this time of year....

It is just one on the dozens of empty seed-cases to be found on the dead stems of common Snapdragon flowers.....I think also that most children know that when a snapdragon flower head is lightly squeezed on its side...the dragonís mouth opens.....but they donít know of....

.......These horrific skulls, which look like something from a horror movie, but a macro lens or magnifying glass is required to see them properly.

Another shot from my £25 DIY macro lens.

It does look just like a horrific skull. I'm going to have to go out and squeeze my dried up snapdragons. Maybe I'll try a few other plants dried up seeds too.

Thanks daisymaye.... ... your feedback very valuable...

The squeeze is meant for the flower head and not its seed pod... the flower head looks like a dragon, when the widest sides are gently squeezed the dragon mouth opens .....children love to see it.

The skull-like seed pods appear after the flower head has died off, and the plant stem dried in the sun....the seeds burst out of those empty sockets....leaving a flower stem lined with miniature skulls....

Nicely done Cyril, something I wasn't aware of (but then we don't have any Snapdragons).

Looks straight out or Dr Who... How/What are you using as DIY Macro. A few days ago I was watching a youtube video on free lensing and reversing lenses.

Hi, Dave,

Thank you too for your observations and query....with reference to my DIY Lens and set up, if you look through the forums you will discover a few tutorials mine is among them.

Essentially I acquired a tiny vintage high-end Cine-camera lens via eBay for circa £25... this I hot glued into a black plastic bottle top, so it, in turn glued to an M42 adapter to micro four thirds to fit on my LUMIX GX8.

The lens magnifies well without extension rings but by adding one; or both, excellent macro’s can be shot.

I keep the lens at around F8 to gain maximum DOF.... it works best in bright sunlight, I can use a diffused flash if it’s dull...my portfolio contains many examples shot with it. Plus a photo of my set up.

Hope this helps ?

Would never, ever have guessed this was a seedhead, it looks very alien, something I wouldn't like to meet after dark !
