All Hallows

By AngieLatham
Special thanks to POOCHIE for the lone of Rondi's portrait that I have used for the Goddess Smile

Here we are again....my favourite time of the year (well, bar Mayday and Yule....and possibly Midsummer.....em...)

All Hallows Eve aka Halloween aka Samhain

Mother Nature is in her Crone apect , wise and carrying the knowledge of the year's life cycle. At Samhain ( the old Celtic fire Festival, marking the death of the old year and the start of the next one) she returns to the Underworld where she will rest untill Spring (Imbolc, Feb 2nd) and 'digest' the years lessons and experience ,taking all life and greenery with her. Those plants and trees that remain green (such as Holly and Ivy) become sacred plants and are hung in the house around Yule (Winter Solstice) to symbolise that life and light will return once again in Spring with the power of rebirth.

Halloween is where the veil between the physical world and the world of spirit is thin and communication and guidence can be sort from those who have gone before us. Loved ones are rememberd this night and often a plate of food would be left on the table with an empty seat for the 'unseen guest'. Lighted candles are also left as a mark of respect and rememberence.

Halloween is not about evil and black magic. It is one of the major Celtic festivals which mark key points in the changing of the seasons. Halloween ,or rather Samhain, celebrates the God and Goddess as wise Elders and marks the beginning of winter as part of the ever changing wheel of life. Smile

But for those who are too easily scared by media hype,Hollywood films or general missconception about Witches and Witchcraft....don't be scared at going out tonight as real Halloween was last Friday on the Full Moon Wink

Of course I like it! The big version is a MUST see. A lot of work went into this and it really carries the spirit of the season in it. Have you changed your clocks back yet? Usually for us, Halloween is on one of the first days where it is completely dark at 6pm as the clocks were moved back the previous Saturday. But this year we do not 'fall back' for another few weeks. So the kids will not stop by until 1 hour later this year. So it will start at 7 instead of 6.

I agree, you couldn't disappoint us today, Angela. And you haven't. It's so good to see some sense spoken about this time of year, instead of spooks and ghouls and all the other hype. It is a magical time, a special time of transition. It needs to be FELT, contemplated and enjoyed. Ho hum.

Wow....thanks once again for your great feedback,it's so heartwarming Smile

Our clocks went back last Saturday Patrick,as you thought. It's been a brilliant Halloween here today....wild and windy during the day then eerily still and mild this evening. Had a great night with the local kids guiseing round the Castle's estate, taking everyones house in turn....think the adults enjoyed it more than the kids to be honest!

Petra,if I had a laptop then I would get some stock together and let you watch me create somthing at Rowardennan, but it can take hours of buming around before somthing starts to 'click' somtimes....and there's a fair bit of swearing envolved! lol

Yes, we had the kids up to the castle too. Well...er... It's not 'quite' a castle but anyway.... Our weather was rather boring but I did get a fog maker (that you put in water and the fog rises up) and the kids loved it. They all came between 7 and 9 instead of the usual 6 and 9. There was the usual parade of princesses and pirates. Looks much the same as when I was a kid, though the costumes are fancier!

I like the sound of the smoke machine Patrick!
I never could understand the American thing of dressing up like....well...just about anything on halloween, I think all costumes should be scary ones Smile

Much to my horror, a live mouse made an appearence right in the middle of the living room while everyone was sat around the table (including my landord) . I hadto rush about among screaming children and alarmed adults trying to catch it in a pint glass! I knew that there was a mouse in the house as the cats bring them in all the time and then get bored and loose innterest.....trust it to make an appearance infront of everyone instead of lying low under the sofa! Sad Everyone now thinks I'm infested with mice! lol

Never knew that there is such a great and loving tradition that set off modern Halloween. Seems so sweet to set dinner for the ones who are no longer here and remember them.
And the idea that Mother Nature takes the flowers with here, is more uplifting than the idea that everthing in nature is dyeing or sleeping....
Thanks for the story. Excellent image , BTW!
