An Ark for Nature

By brownsilent
Hi everybody,

The Bavarian Forest area has been known for its glass and crystal manufacture for centuries. Glass, where ever you look. Thus it is no wonder that glass was involved in creating a symbol for the care for nature of the people in the region: The Glass Ark An Ark for Nature.
The main idea in creating this ark was the togetherness of the two nations German and Chech people in saving nature. The Ark is the symbol for the work done in the two National Parks, one on each side of the border: the Bavarian Forest and Sumava Forest. The Ark is composed of 480 arcs of handcut pane glass, is about 5m long and weights three tons. After being finished in 2003 the Ark went on a journey on both sides of the border. The first stations were in the Bavarian Forest, then it travelled to the Chech part of the forest, Sumava. There it was set on a huge wooden hand created by Chech sculptors. Each stage of the travel (done in the archaic way, rolling the boat over tree trunks by man power), and each arrival at a new station was celebrated and brought thousands of people together. After two years and twenty places the Ark reached the last destination at the foot of the Lusen, on the German side.

Thanks for taking the time and having a look at the pics.
Have a good one,

An excellent record of a most interesting and symbolic artwork. All versions show varied aspects of the work; I think I prefer the composition of #1. Thats a mighty lot of glass whichever way you view it!

"I would be very glad to come across such sculptures..."
I was about to write, but then I started reading the description and was impressed by the quality of the narrative, the plot and the presentation of the text.
Have you ever, Johanna, considered writing for magazines?

This is a lovely story Johanna. If only people allowed thoughts of this nature to surface more often we would not have half the troubles in the world that we have at present.

I figured it had to be big, but I thought: "Hey can it be bigger than stuff in Texas" - then I opened v2 which really shows the scale. This shows the Texans something too! Wink

Wonderful conception and workmanship, as a photograph, I prefer V3, but like V2 too, as the people give scale to the sheer size of this. The movements must have been a feat in themselves! Well done Johanna, both in camerawork and write-up!
