An Eastern Tiger Swallowtail (Papilio glaucus) (best viewed large)

By gconant
Indigenous to North America.
They have wingspans of 3 - 5.5"
They fly swiftly and powerfully, in almost any terrain.
Northern Tigers breed twice during per season, while southern Tigers breed three times.
If they feel endangered during mating, the females will carry the males away to safety.
There are 4 distinct species of this butterfly.
They are the Eastern Tiger Swallowtail, the Appalachian Tiger Swallowtail, the Black Swallowtail (female only), and the Spicebush Swallowtail.
Being members of the Brush Footed Butterfly family, they use their two front legs for tasting food, and their two pairs of rear legs for propulsion.
During mating, if they feel threatened, the female will carry the male away to safety.
They are the official state butterfly of the state of Alabama.

I used to have a lot of them in my back yard, and still see them occasionally.

Beautiful colours.
A long time ago, the photos would be film prints, there was a swarm of them a little in from the shore of the Bay of Fundy where my parents had a cottage. I went off with the photos and a professor at the university told me they were Swallow tails. No more than that. Can you imagine how many years ago that was?

A fantastic capture as always, Glen. Your butterflies are never two the same even when they are of the same butterfly.
