An elephant encounter

By ColleenA
Good day....
I would like to thank you all for the well wishes I received for Robs operation yesterday. He had a successful hip replacement and is doing remarkably well.
I would also like to thank Ian (Franko59) for his UA for my lioness, much appreciated.
We had the most incredible encounter with 5 elephant on the weekend. Early in the morning drive, we picked up their footprints on the track and had circled around to see if we could find them. Lo and behold they were on the track in front of us and walking fast towards us. Its when they are this close you appreciate their size. Our Ranger quickly reversed and fortunately their was a track to our left and he reversed sideways into there. (You will see our tyre marks in V2, as we were reversing they were already walking on them) Within seconds they were trundling past us. One elephant was almost past us when she glanced towards us...stopped...lifted her trunk to smell us, gave our Tracker a stare down and then swiftly moved on to join the rest of the herd. Fortunately it was only my heart that stopped and not my finger on the shutter, just love her whiskers below her tusks......I have uploaded the sequence of events...in V7 you will see our Tracker is nonchalantly sitting looking back at her...he really is a cool dude with nerves of steel...the lead image is shot at a focal length of 120mm, and is straight out the camera uncropped .the rest of the set shot at 50mm...
Have a nice day...

What an exciting encounter beautifully recorded here. Love them all but the last image with the lovely, dappled light where they seem to be saying 'We' re bored with you now so we're off," is my personal favourite.

I do hope that you produce a photo book of your African wildlife adventures. If you do, do include my favourites, the warthogs.

Brilliant pictures, taking us on safari without leaving our chairs.
Great detail and story.

Good news that things are progressing there!
Outstanding set of images, Colleen. The images together with your narrative makes me feel I was there with you. I enjoyed those great phrases you used like:
it was only my heart that stopped and not my finger on the shutter and he really is a cool dude with nerves of steel.

Very good series, Colleen. This elephant was only curious, a sign of danger is when they curl the trunk up tightly behind the tusks, then they charge to kill. A threat behavior is when they mock charge, with ear piercing blasts of trumpeting, ears aflare, but they dont (usually!) curl the trunk up. Such a mock charge usually stops when they are a few feet away. Any sign of agression or fear (running away) can instantly change it from a mock charge to the real thing. Sorry to hear of your hubby, very glad to hear the op went off OK. The Internet has been down for a few days here. Regards Martin.

Quote:Very good series, Colleen. This elephant was only curious, a sign of danger is when they curl the trunk Regards Martin.

In the last 4 years we have been charged by trumpeting elephants three times without any warning signs from them at all. We were fortunate that each time our Ranger had positioned the vehicle that we had a clear exit path. You can see the way the vehicle is parked in this set, pointing away from the direction they were walking in case we had to get away. So I am always wary of them, they are not always predictable.

I love your photos. The wildlife we have here consists of Magpies and Coyotes, unless you go to the Children's Zoo. When I take my grandchildren there I just feel sorry for them. Keep recording, there will be a time when it's no longer possible, in fact, wildlife photography should now be classified as photo-journalism.
