Anderton Boat Lift

By DicksPics
Today's images were taken during a 'Boys' Day Out' to the Anderton Boat lift in Cheshire.

The Anderton Boat Lift is a wonderful example of Victorian waterway engineering.

It is sometimes referred to as the 'Cathedral of the Canals'.

It was designed and built by Edwin Clark in 1875 to lift cargo boats the 50 feet from the River Weaver to the Trent & Mersey Canal.

The original counter-balanced and hydraulically operated system was replaced in 1908 by electric operation.

V7, taken in the gift shop, shows what the original lift would have looked like.

The replacement system, designed by Colonel John Arthur Saner, required much structural reinforcement as the motors and huge double helical gear pulleys were housed on the top of the structure.

The lift was closed in 1983 when serious deterioration of the structure was discovered whilst it was being re-painted. The huge pulleys were removed from the top for safety reasons, as can be seen in V8

The lift now works hydraulically again, a result of its restoration
The pulleys have been restored to the top of the structure to give an authentic '1908 look' but have no operational function.

7m was raised to fund the restoration, which was completed in 2002 when the lift re-opened.

Versions 9 and 10 have been included to give some historical details the lift, its designers and their designs.

Many thanks for all votes, comments and wonderful awards(individual PMs sent) for my 'Packwood House and Gardens' upload - much appreciated, folks, as always.

Decorating has been taking up my time of late so, apologies for not viewing your photos as often as I would have liked.
