I have a fondness for a good still life. So this gets my vote.
Have you tried focus stacking. You can get all the subject in focus and have a nice blurred background. It may not be what you want of course - but I have found it very useful.

Thanks Bob, was trying the opposite with this one as was on a still life masterclass day at Amateur Photography Magazine & the tutor was getting me to shoot out of my comfort zone, which is normally everything in focus :)
