Angry Swan

By Otinkyad
In the breeding season male swans get very aggressive towards interlopers (and photographers). This is one of several from a high speed burst that I took as he flew/ran across the pond towards me. I had previously noted that he stopped when he reached the bank!
In the original the swan's sunlit wing showed litle detail - although the Histogram indicated that it wasn't burnt out. I therefore saved both a darkened & a lightened version from RAW to TIF, worked on them with Photoshop Levels, and then combined the 2 with Photomatix Highlight & Shadows - this seemed to work reasonably well.

A very strong image which will pass most scrutiny. Your treatment has resulted in some slightly strange tones in some of the highlights and edges of higher contrast. Seems most noticeable in the splashing water which I would expect to be brighter.

Potentially a great image. I think Photomatix and post processing has ruined it in many ways, the water, the inside of the swans left wing. Ive tried a mod, - but its far gone to recover in many areas. If you have the two original shots, why not upload both of the as modification right here, see we can see what you started with prior to any levels or Photomatix.. Just click modifications, upload modification.

Thanks for uploading the two you worked on.

The lighter version of the two is actually underexposed, and I used this one only as a basis for another modification using Photoshop CS6 only. Its clear that the light you worked with was quite difficult, very bright light coming from the left.

It brings another question to mind I should have asked before, - what is the as-shot version with no processing? If it not one of theses, and you still have it, - you can go back to the RAW file if you have it and remove and changes you made, and upload that? I has incorrectly assumed one of these two would be an as-shot. The as-shot is the only one that can indicate what the camera recorded with no changes. If you dont have it, no problem.

Hope this is helping!
