Anna battering fish

By AlanWillis
Before eating a fish, the kingfisher hits it on a branch.
This makes the fins move close to it's body, enabling the kingfisher to swallow it without it sticking in it's throat.
I have been photographing kingfishers for nearly 10 years, and find this one of the most difficult shots to achieve.
The kingfisher has a third eyelid, which protects it's eye when under water, In the photograph this eyelid protect from bits of fish or branch damaging it's eye.
