The classic amanita mascara.....grows in pinewoods in the Fall all over the world, red, orange, yellow. Said to be both toxic (but not fatally, like its cousin amanita verna, the Destroying Angel--all white) and psychoactive. I have seen speculation that Plato may have eaten these....and that the Allegory of the Cave, the conceptual core of his Republic, might have come from that. For those who have had those experiences, The Allegory of the Cave may be the best description of a psychedelic experience I had ever read (and reflective for me of the peyote experience).
