Antique Cars #2...and a bonus

By handlerstudio
OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

My grandfather loved Packards. They went out of business in the 1950s....after that he graduated, I think reluctantly, to Caddies. I think Packard was to Cadillac as Indians were to Harleys....Always the better car...but maybe not the better business. Harley's were second to Indians, but Harley Davidson stayed in business.

Here, we are looking at the upper end of the grill of the Packardd. Atop this is the front of the hood ornament. A full view of it can be seen in V8, in all its glory. Thank you Dora for the suggestion.

The bonus....my previous short series...the old cars, tractor and Mobil sign from Upstate New York I found because I was delivering a bed that I made that was commissioned...I will show it in this set. It is white oak (a very heavy and dense wood) and red cedar (the head and footboard, and the centers of the posts for the bed. The center posts for the hard and foot are oak, with through tenons with cedar wedges.

And, deep thanks to Dora, (IamDora), Ian (Dales), Isabel (Chinga) and Walt Knox (Walt Knox) for their UAs yesterday.

For friends from the UK, particularly southern England, particular seeing best thoughts to you all....it sounds like things are really tough over there.

Not quite sure what I'm looking at. The hood ornament but what is it exactly. One of those things you have to explain to the ladies, maybe.

Thank you Dora, I edited my comments and on your suggestion, added an explanation.

Another beautiful set, Peter. A very interesting write-up brings back lovely memories of woodwork classes during my school years. Also thanks for your kind thoughts.

Excellent, Peter!
The Packard is a truly beautiful motorcar and comprehensively illustrated.
Thanks for posting the images of the bed, too - I particularly like those wedged tenons.

Another beautiful find Peter.
Yes, another blow here in West London but by consulting the smallprint I think we are going to be able to have our granddaughter over for a few days for her first Christmas. Others we know not so lucky. Even without Trump we have got the virus being rolled out, so that's good. With Boris, we've got Brexit so that's not so good!
Keep them coming

The bed looks perfect in that room... And it's even more beautiful than the Packard radiator grille. We have a bed of vaguely-similar design, but it's mass-produced, and lacks the absolute solidity and beautiful detailing and joints of your work. A bed that will outlast many mattresses, and will bring delight to generations of owners, I hope.

Happy Christmas!

Hood ornament: Apparently Packard had a series of hood ornaments unlike other cars that settled on one as their symbol.. The one I remember was a swan. Sorry for the confusion. Dora

A most handsome auto mobile Peter ..can see why your grandfather liked them ...what style ! And not a common choice in colour ...pumpkin a l’orange but it works ....
Safe travels in those winter conditions my friend we are forecast to get 30 - to 40 cm of snow here which is great the Tobago’s hills were very bare looking for Christmas ..
You are one heck of woodworker the cedar work
makes for one unique and very attractive looking bed frame. Wish it were mine , a bit large for Santa though !
Best regards
