Aquarium

Today, 3 pictures about the Constanţa Aquarium
As many construction, has an evolution. At first was conceived as the Casino's restaurant (was built in the same style, by the same French architect Daniel Renard, in 1901, just in face of the main building of the Casino). This blog will show you how it looked at origins, and other seafront and casino pictures from the beginning of the XX century.
In 1958, as the main building of the Casino turned into a big restaurant, this one was modified as the first in Romania Aquarium. With this renovation, facades changed too, as they look today (3 pictures above).
In our days the Aquarium is a significant part of the Contanţa National Museum of Natural Sciences (alongside a Planetarium, a miniature Delta, an aviary with exotic birds and the main attraction a Dolphinarium). Aquarium has 3 section of fishes: marine, freshwater and exotic. The main interest go to the fauna of the Black Sea. In a big basin of 30 cubic meters are the local "monsters" - sturgeons and local sharks
Sturgeons are so specific for the Caspian and Black seas, Romania is still a caviar big producer, even if, with the dams on Danube, poaching, intensive fishing, the number of sturgeon species() has decreased dramatically, some have disappeared, others are considered endangered species. Local sharks are represented especially by Smooth hammerhead, Spiny dogfish and Longnose spurdog. Others attractions are Thornback ray, Common stingray (both knew in Romanian as Sea cats), Flat-fish, Dolphins, Black Sea salmon, Black scorpion fish, etc. But the symbol of all is the Long-snouted seahorse, the emblem of this aquarium. Tourists are impressed by the big sturgeons: beluga (Romanian: morun), Russian sturgeon (nisetru), starry sturgeon (păstrugă ), European sea sturgeon (şip), bastardsturgeon (viză ) and sterlet (cegă ). When I was child the aquarium had an enormous beluga (>5 meters long).
So, a whole "household aquatic": dogs, horses, cats...GrinGrin
You can "admire" there and what you hate most as a Black Sea tourist: jellyfish and algae (beaches are regularly invaded by those unpleasant intruders - in fact we are the real intruders).
I found in Wikipedia a complete list of the Black Sea fauna, if interested you can browse it here.
And finally a short video with the great basin showing the monsters in action - some big sturgeons ( do you feel the caviar smell? Grin) and a sea cat...
