If, as appears, they have retained an original kiln, I applaud that.

They have. But they put glass all round it, and rebuilt the pub on the corner from scratch - possibly for good reason, possibly not...

This is all around 200 metres (as the smoke drifts) from the Gladstone Pottery Museum.

They now look similar and smoothly integrated. Various elements are used to bind the old and new together in terms of material and design of new structure that follows the old...

So its not a bottle factory or a big place for bottling wine! - just a great capture for SS.
IMHO the old windows look just as bad if not worse, as they remind me of derelict airfields.

A typical architectural method, when preserving and integrating remarkable traditional parts of buildings or architectural pieces, is the use of glass on large surfaces of the new structure, in order not to confuse the old with the new, on the contrary, because of the aesthetic neutrality of the glass as a material, to show the old one to the best possible way.
My opinion, as an architect, is that it is a successful example.

I like the photograph as a historical/geographical record. It has lots of interesting detail, from that small sign for the "Cycle Shelter?) to the posters around that nice new door. Even the 21st century lights are counterbalanced by what looks like a cast-iron Victorian downspout.

I also like the idea of preserving the local industrial history. But, lacking artistic sensitivity this morning, I have a contrary opinion to the concept of surrounding that brick-clad kiln in glass - all I see is a giant "bottle" sticking out of the top of the glass building. That bottle even has a "crown-cork" seal to complete the illusion.
Nice to see a bit of snow on the ground! An interesting image.

"Will somebody put the milk bottle in the fridge or are you waiting for your mother to do all the chores around the house?"
