Arctic light

By AnnChown
This is Hammerfest taken, handheld, from a boat at 11.22 am. I like the lights in the windows and car headlights which shine out in this strange light. Minutes later the snow started to fall heavily again. This for me is all about that amazing light. The image has had very little processing, just a bit adjustment to the exposure (lightening), contrast and sharpening.
Thank you for your enthusiastic reception of Arctic blizzard, and special thanks to Ken (franken), John (life snapper), Jason (jasonrwl) and Lin (sweetpea62) for their UAs. I was really pleased that you all liked it so much given that we nearly froze getting the shot! Smile

A real beauty Ann I love this blue light and the little detail of the red warning light on the hilltop is just superb!

Nicely done Ann.

It's a different world, isn't it...
I did the vote of thanks at the talk on Norway on Monday. I recalled that when I was working the office divided into two camps. Most of the staff spent their summer holiday beside a pool at a hotel on the Med. They used to send postcards with a picture of the hotel, I don't think they ever moved outside it.
Then there was Pauline the typist and me. Pauline's dream was Antarctica, mine is Siberia and Lake Baikal in winter.
This is my sort of holiday.

The light, or relative lack of it, makes this shot so special, Ann: must be odd living for months in an area that never sees the sun ( mind you that's a bit like here this winter).
The lights shining in the gloom makes for such an interesting image.
And what an experience just being there.

I have a similar photo taken in the summer (24 hour daylight!) and no snow and yes this is a different world from then.

We have had some light like this recently-- 3 Pm and it is nearly dark (today we have hyper light-- NO cloud cover-- dangerous light!

The lights in your image fascinate-- Hope the snow was not too deep!

Noticed a few comments re strange light Ann. Shooting into that snow the camera would have closed down - and I see you do not have a + compensation on exposure settings. I like the lights sprinkled everywhere in the image and it captures the coldness but a little underexposed I feel.Smile

The light really is beautiful here, Ann. Everything is just so clean and crisp and clear too! The air there must be lovely, huh?

Tell you what I love about this too ---> the fact that nothing much was done to it. So cool when things come out like that from the camera Smile

People often forget that the land of the midnight sun is, in winter, the land of no sun at all. It never makes it above the horizon, and this image from Hammerfest shows how little light there is in the middle of the day. This must have been a bright day, Ann!Grin
(btw..you really must get back to Honningsvåg and Lofoten in summer)

Thanks Malc - the light is extraordinary. We loved it and Christopher wants to get back to Tromso again this winter. Not sure whether we will or not, but we had such a great time there.
