Are You Looking At Me???

By AlanBW
Tricia and I have returned safe and sound after a fascinating and extremely enjoyable trip around Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania. We saw some magnificent architecture in all three countries; the local people were welcoming and charming and although the weather was rather unsettled at the start, we ended the trip with a few days of bright, warm sunshine.

We flew from the UK for an overnight stop in Riga and the following morning set off for a stay in Vilnius; then we went on to Sigulda for one night, followed by a spell in Tallinn and finally back to Riga, where we spent some time before returning home. As well as seeing all these wonderful locations, we also took in visits to other places of interest en route, including Trakai, Kaunas, Cesis, Tartu, Parnu, Pilsrundale and the Hill of Crosses at Siauliai.

As always, in addition to taking images of the beautiful buildings and fascinating side streets and courtyards, I was keen to capture the expressive faces of some of the characters I encountered, both locals and visitors alike. The above image was taken in the old part of Vilnius; it was around noon and I had lined up a general shot to show some of the architecture when this astonishing character came into view and headed straight towards me. I couldn't pass up an opportunity like this! Tall, thin and rather scruffy, with an unsteady gait and a carrier bag slung over one shoulder, he approached me. He appeared surprised by my presence with a camera and unveiled a most curious expression as he got near. I waited until he got reasonably close and captured the shot. I took the shot from waist level thanks to the flip-up viewfinder on my camera and I was not looking directly at him when I hit the shutter, so he wouldn't have known the shot had been taken. Having secured the shot, I simply waited for him to go by so that I could take some images of the splendid architecture as intended. On passing he lurched towards me and muttered something that I did not understand, although I suspect it was far from complimentary – I just ignored it. Fortunately he did not stop or kick up a fuss and I was able to continue with what I was doing unhindered. Later that day I saw him confront another camera-wielding visitor into whose viewfinder he had unwittingly strayed, so I guess he must have had a lens allergy.

There are quite a few more characters and candid images to come from the Baltic Republics; I hope that you will enjoy viewing them as much as I did in capturing them.

I've missed loads of great uploads while we've been away, but I'll do my best to catch up over the next few days. Please forgive any clicking and running that I might have to do!
