Arena di Verona

By TrevBatWCC
In the heart of Verona's centre is Piazza Brà, the main square in the city. At the top end is the Arena di Verona, a well preserved Roman amphitheatre, built in 30 AD. It is still in use today and is internationally famous for the large-scale opera performances given there, and is one of the best preserved ancient structures of its kind. In ancient times, nearly 30,000 people was the housing capacity of the Arena. Nowadays, for security reasons, the maximum attendance is 15,000 people.
Originally it had an outer wall, but a major earthquake in 1117 almost completely destroyed the structure's outer ring – the only remaining part is on the left in these two images.
Will show more fuller views of the arena later! Wink

Two superb looking shots Trev, the figure gives scale to the size of that exterior.

That outer wall must either be extremely well put together to survive strong winds, or has been reinforced in modern times.

Super captures, Trev. We were there many years ago, and they were preparing the arena for a massive version of Verdi's Aida - wish we could have stayed and seen it.
