Around Ravenscar, N.Yorkshire

By HobbitDave
A popular but rather unusual small hamlet on the edge of the Yorkshire coast. Wonderful views across to Robin Hoods bay as in lead image.
Vs 1 and 2 are the old railway sign and platform - mus be one of the few stations where you could sit in the country and wait until you heard the train coming. The track is just behind the sign, only a few steps away. The train line closed in 1965, but its memory is preserved today with the platform and sign.
V.3 are old cottages once used by Alum workers, Alum being mined from the overgrown cliff below until the 1860s

Worth reading just for how Alum was refined in the 19th century. It seems like the process became a wee problem after some years 🤧

The Alum mines were in the shadow section of the overgrown cliffs in v.4. Centre left.

Great captures Dave and the write up adds so much to the photos. I am still thinking about upgrading the camera. Debs
