A rainy day on the isle of Arran.

I'm very new to landscape photography - any comments are welcome as I would like to learn.

Many thanks for looking.

I like this. Nice foreground detail and the sky in the top 1/3. Well composed

Is that a seal posing on the rock to the right? If so I think that was your picture Wink from a landscape perspective the foreground is quite interesting but the composition is unbalanced. The key details going into the image are right of centre and the left is faded due to shooting into the light. A more balanced composition would be achieved by shooting more to the right as I will try to demonstrate with a mod. Steve

The modification is a great technical improvement - you are too low on contrast. I agree, the Seal was really your shot. Whilst your composition is good, the subject matter isn't terribly interesting and the lighting hasn't helped. You needed some dramatic lighting.

Thanks for your comments and the mod - I understand what you mean and after seeing the mod it makes sense.
That is not a real seal! It's just a rock shaped like a seal Smile Maybe I'll upload a picture of it tomorrow!

You can make a nice shot from this, despite the shortcomings already mentioned.

The horizon for a start needs to be level. Depending on your skill with Photoshop, you can reduce highlights and darken that left side, increase vibrancy, and get a result like Mod1.

Better still to have a composition with the horizon on a third, you could go for a square crop, as in Mod2. And, - you can simply have a rock pool shot, again square, by simply removing the top completely.

Hope this helps also,

Missed this Steph - been busy. The guys who have already commented have said it all and know much more than me anyway. I think I quite like Willie's rock pool effect mod.
