Arriving at Constable Point

By TheURL
A general interest photo, this is the view from a Twin Otter propeller plane as we arrive at Constable Point (known locally as Nerlerit Inaat) in north-east Greenland. A gravel runway built in1985 for oil exploration purposes and now serving the small village of Ittoqqortoormiit 25 miles to the south-east. Before that the villagers had to use the military runway at Mestersvig, two days by dog-sled to the north.

Since 9/11 it's not easy getting cockpit views - but in a Twin Otter the passengers are pretty much in there with the pilot!

Does this strip need clearing on a daily basis? From this approach image it appears to be snow pushed to the sides recently. Thanks for your posting this Simon, I'll never be getting to this place.

Maybe not daily, but fresh or blown snow would need clearing away quite regularly I guess. I figured this photo wouldn't be a vote-winner but I think it's quite an interesting photo of a very unusual place. I'll probably never get there again - especially at their prices!
