Central composition is always a slight problem, at the least: one looks at it twice, to see if there's a reason.
Therefore, I always try to avoid it, if i can, and often this means cropping.
I'm trying to convey that it is OK to use central composition, but I feel it should never be by accident - the result of a very positive choice. Quite often, with low light or action, I compose centrally in the viewfinder for speed, knowing I will crop later.
