Artistic Challenges

By parob
Roy Lichtenstein 32 foot painted aluminium 1966 sculpture Brushstroke in its permanent setting, the central court entrance to Madrid's National Museum Reina Sofia Art Centre extension. Designed by French architect Jan Nouvel, the extension opened in 2005. Each work challenges its medium in specific ways. Nouvel by choosing to emphasise shade rather than light, as demanded by Le Corbusier, and Lichtenstein by transferring his 1965 Pop art series from canvas to sculpture.
