Ash Wednesday

By Joline
The pelican, the ancient symbol of love and sacrifice seemed a good emblem for this day.
Legend has it that the pelican will feed her chicks with her own blood in times of famine and stress. It is a prechristian symbol that was adopted by the early Christian church and has recorded history as far back as Physiologus, a work from Alexandria around the second century. It was used often in Renaissance literature, and appears often in churches to symbolize Christ.

The wonderful blue and grey work so well together; I didn't know that bit of symbolism Joline - very interesting.

What a wonderful photograph! Beautifully clear, sharp and such rich colours! Stained glass can be difficult to photograph and correctly expose but I think you have done a marvellous job with this image! Brilliant, thank you.
