Ashlett Creek Fawley. Hampshire.
It's history is fascinating.
Now on the edge of the ESSO Oil Refinery.
The first tidal mill recorded at the site was in 1241. The Quay is called Victoria quay. Built in 1887 to commemorate Queen Victoria's Golden Jubilee.
It is thought the name "Ashlett" may be derived from the Viking custom of planting an Ash stave in the ground where their ships first landed and "Flete" from a creek or stretch of salt water.
Fawley was recorded in the doomsday book. There has been a Church here since 971. The current "All Saints Church" was built in1170.
All in all a pretty historic little place.
Sorry got a bit carried away with the description of my little village on the shores of Southampton water.
Tim.
