At the Ponte de la Crose

By GwailoAngMo
On this day we were following the walk in the parish of San Nicola de Tolentino. All the walks start from a vaporetto stop. Even with the unpromising Piazzale Roma as our opening gambit the facts and history came thick and whirlwind fast, including a mention of monks behaving scandalously but sadly nothing specific, unlike a story in the old News of the World.

Pausing at the steps of the Ponte de la Crose, both literally and narratively, I was taken how the waste bin and column complemented each other. This column may have been the starting point of a public punishments paraded through the city. Paolo Giordani relates a particularly unpleasant and vengeful punishment and eventual execution of Battista Piantella, a double murderer. If you ask nicely I might provide the gory details. Itís best not read over the morning cornflakes.

On a lighter note, Giordani informed us the added Greek marble capital bears ďa carved monogram like those on the two Pili Acritani at the side of the Basilica of San Marco.Ē When you consider how many centuries old this capital may be, the close up detail I took separately shows it to be in rather good condition.
