I really thought this was a cardboard cut out intended for display when I first saw it. At first glance it looks too big to be real but it is and what a superb specimen to see. Some say the snakes like head on the wing tips is there to ward off predators, sadly the adult moths typically die within a week or two of spreading their wings.
ITíS THE LARGEST MOTH IN THE WORLD IN TERMS OF WING SURFACE AREA.
The wingspan of a female Atlas Moth can reach up to 12 inches with a surface area of 62 square inches. Go ahead and hold up a ruler Ö thatís one big bug.
