Bag It

By AnneWorner
I've started giving myself projects to help my "vision".

I choose a spot downtown, and try to make a fairly decent image of something mundane. I restrict myself to one lens. Now, if the weather would improve again - but looks like the rains are coming our way for the rest of the week.

I've been spending some of my time in the Critique Gallery recently, and thought I would upload an image of my own to this gallery. Constructive critique will be well received Smile

Thanks for looking.

Anne

EXIF: f/2.0 @ 1/4000, ISO 100, Aperture Priority, RAW

ETA: Shot through a shop window of a display at Hennes & Mauritz. Time of day: 2:30 pm with light throwing good shadows on objects. The hanging item is the bottom of a dress. Funky window display Smile

Hi Anne,
This image makes me wonder whether the robe (or whatever it is) is about to be packed into the bag, or perhaps the owner of the bag has just arrived. I like images that make me curious. If anything I would have liked the items to be a little bit closer or perhaps just a bit more white around the bag. Perhaps as much as is to the right of the dress (or whatever it is!). I can't really explain why.

I thought the subject to the right was curtains? I like the idea of this image, and think the composition is really good, but I feel it would work better as a more high key image I have added a mod in which I brightened up the image extended the white thing, (so if its not curtains it now looks like curtains in my mod) and took away the shadow. I extended the white object by copying and pasting the visible area and moved it down the page to where I wanted it to end and simply cloned the rest of it in above using a selection again of the visible bit, I then cloned out any shadow left on the wall and brightened the image using curves. hope this helps

Thanks guys - I should have explained this more clearly. This is not a set-up by me. It is a display window in Hennes & Mauritz. The hanging item is the lower half of a dress!! So, I have shot this through glass, with no possibility of moving anything. SmileThanks so much for comments and for the mod.

As Ellie says, this hints at stories untold. The slightly desaturated look of the bag adds to that feeling. But what I really like is the difference between the outline of the dress and its shadow - I love it when shadows take on a life of their own. Sorry I cannot vote so I've shortlisted instead.

Hello, Anne. Yes, I've noticed your valuable contributions to the Critique Gallery, and here you are now with a picture of your own. I like your idea of a project, getting a decent image of something mundane. As you say, you were limited here because of the set-up. The bag is beautifully clear and the shadows are good, and there is some texture on the wall too. I feel the two elements are separated too much, and it's a shame that you couldn't get more of the dress in the frame so that the viewer can tie up the two elements. It does look a bit like a towel or a curtain. Still, I've had a go at a modification, where I cut and pasted the image to bring the bag and dress closer together. I then cropped and added some canvas to the bottom to help the composition. I used the burn tool on the dress and shadow so that the definition of the two elements was a little closer. My second mod has a hue added, and my third is a mono version. I think the wall texture shows up better on the last two.

Pamela, thanks for all your work on these modifications. I couldn't capture any more of the dress, as there was a red section in the window covering the section above. The designer of the display set it up this way. Thanks again.

Setting yourself assignments is such a great way to stretch your skills. Truthfully, I like everything about this, it tells a little story, the subtle coloring is much to my liking and the composition is first rate.

I like this, - its a good subject, simple, and can suggest a story with a little imagination. I actually thought, until I read your description, that this was shot in a gym, with a kit bag near a hanging towel.

I like the light, gives nice range of contrast, and technically its sharp, - so exercise is successful I think. I would leave as is, or at the most make a monotone mod.

The quality is quite excellent. I must be missing something - but what is this story being told? This type of image is where personnel prefernce comes in. As I've said, can fault your quality, but can't really see the point.

I took a very similar picture yesterday in Birmingham, through a shop window, great minds think alike and I think yours works well, mods are good too but I don't think they improve your image.

Hi Anne,
I really like the picture and the first impression I've got is the contrast between the meaning of the packed bag and the hanged cloth.
It reminds me the Clash song "should I stay or should I go?".
With this in mind, I've uploaded a mod in which I've cropped the right part to make the diagonal line formed by the couple bag/cloth even stroger, then after conversion in B/W (PS3) the blues have been made lighter and the yellow darker to increase the contrast between bag and cloth.
just minor changes of a (as usual) beautiful picture.

Your original is best by far. It's good to see mods so we can compare and put thoughts in action, but I like it as it is. Simple, pure and clean.

Works very well, for me. I think I'd clone out the blemish on the wall on the left-hand edge (at about the height of the bag handles) but, aside from that, I've nothing to suggest.
