Different responses to the uncomfortable feeling that you are in a total stranger's frame.
1) Try to outstare him;
2) Ignore him darling, he'll go away.
Edit - oh and it is perfectly balanced.

it seems so weird that one person takes notice of you, the other one is deeply immersed in the book and yet they are totally detached from the world outside. My favourite in the series.
