Definitely need some silver dip, Ann Wink. Cleverly thought out and captured, bet it was hard boiled first GrinGrin Carol

Well it's a nice speckled hens egg Ann, and the forks are only a prop so I don't think they matter to much, the main focus is on the egg, but I personally feel a dark background would have done a better finish, not necessarily black, say a grey colour to highlight the egg, worth a play around, like it anyway, regards Leon, GrinGrinGrinGrinGrinGrinGrin

This works better than the limes for me - although that was wonderful - here it is well lit, its simple and the pattern on the egg stands out really well SmileSmile

Some fine detail on the egg and an interesting set up. I hope to try my hand at some still life in the coming weeks.

I also prefer this to the limes. I've never tried this myself but probably will one day Smile

I may do a mod later, as I would like to see this in mono - my current passion..........

I too prefer the egg to the limes. Nothing against limes, Ann; but they are for adding piquancy and flavour, while the egg is The Real Thing all on its own Smile Though I suspect the egg was harder to balance.
Lovely textures.
4 Jan 2013 5:55PM
Very VERY good Ann, and as far as this type of image goes, I really think you've cracked it. But not the Egg thankfully Smile

Yes I prefer this to the limes, for the reflectionless simplicity as well as the subject. There's something elemental about eggs, like bread, wine, cheese.
The use of the reflector is subtle, there's just enough shadow on the right side of the egg.
I couldn't get away with this with my forks - I use them too often to hack into frozen foods...

A good technical exercise and very well accomplished, Ann. Aesthetically you are going to get many varied opinions. My preference would be for a darker background. Our EPNS cutlery comes out once a year at Christmas. With a 10yr guarantee it should be good for over 3,500 years!!

I thought I'd have a go at a drastic crop to make the photo a bit more abstract. I also rotated just the egg anti-clockwise, as it was leaning slightly.

I like the still-life photos you have been uploading lately, they are fun to do mods onSmile

Thanks Alan - yes, it is slightly off centre. I like your mod too. Thanks for your lovely comment about my still lifes - still a long way to go, but I'm having fun. Hopefully I'll get the camera out again at the weekend for some more experiments.

I think the fact that the plating has come off the forks adds to the colour and texture in is fine shot.

I like this one, - your getting good at balancing. And I see youve solved the black background issue too!

I like Paintmans mod also with the Egg straighter, both work well.

Now, try a shot using an empty shell, cracked, with some yolk running down the forks!

Great shape to the egg Ann and I like it on that bg - I think the wear on the forks add to the image too.

The uses of eggs appear to be endless! Tongue Lovely texture in the shell and I love that shadow from the forks. As to whether the latter are in need of TLC, who am I to comment as I am sure placed in front of the camera lens, most of us would find our cutlery failing the pristine test! I think that's what's generally called "reality"!

You are a good egg Ann for giving these still life images a fair crack, when it boils down to it this is the best yet. No need to fork out on more expensive photographic equipment or end up scrambling your brain trying to come up with new innovative ideas, the epzers' have given you plenty of food for thought with their excellent adviceSmile

Good capture Ann, I did this myself a while back on a black background and I have to say that, despite some of the earlier comments, you were definitely right to choose the white background.
I think, if you asked me (which of course you didn't!) I prefer the lime, only because it is more original in concept.

Now I know you always ask for critique, but please feel free to disagree, A slightly wider depth of field would have created a sharper look in a couple of places and the shadow behind the right hand fork destroys the symmetry slightly.... You see I'd make a good club judge... always able to find some small thing to bang on about!

I have been doing some still life myself today and might upload one tomorrow... feel free to stop by and get your own back!
