Bang!

By jasonrwl
Tried my hand at some high speed flash with a water balloon popping - we had a "water" theme in a club competition yesterday so I thought this might fit the bill and it got me a 3rd so I was happy. I have put up a couple of other attempts as versions.

Thanks to all who voted and commented on yesterday's picture and particularly to Carol (CarolAnnLauderdale) and Dave (WhiteRose1) for their precious UAs

Thanks for looking
Jason

Brilliant..

A great set of perfectly captured images. However I am a little stumped with the shutter speed of 1.2 seconds?

Thanks for sharing Jason.

Thanks Nathan. The technique uses the very short flash duration (much shorter than the fastest camera shutter speed - if turned down to lowest power the flash duration can be around 1/50,000 sec) to capture the moment. It is done in a dark room and the camera shutter held open on "bulb". You then pop the balloon in the dark and the sound triggers the flash (I used triggertrap). Although the shutter is open for quite a long time the only light is of very short duration.

Of the three versions here, I think I like V2 the best Grin
I'm amazed you only got 3rd, to be honest - this is really good!

Congratulations on your 3rd placing with this Jason.
A very interesting technique and a lot of patience.
I like the repeat of the blues of sleeve and balloon in V3.
The right adds to the drama in V1.
You've certainly explored many genres of photography over the years -
I hope it's paying off at the club.
