Barnard Castle is a market town in Teesdale, County Durham, and is named after the castle around which it grew up. I believe the castle was one of the largest in the North of England. I visited earlier this year so here are a few views. J.

Not a place I've visited, but looks good, Joan SmileSmile I do like to wander around castles, or castle ruins as here.
The local castle here, Sandal Castle, can be seen from my bedroom window, but there's very little left of it. It's an uphill climb to it, and it does have a claim to fame as where "The Grand Old Duke of York marched his 10,000 men to the top of the hill and marched them down again" according to the nursery rhyme!
