Bayleaf Kitchen

By pamelajean
(Continuing my Southampton series. The Old Town has over 90 listed buildings and more than 30 ancient monuments).

When I saw this ornately tiled building I just had to delve into its history.

Now an Indian Restaurant (Bayleaf Kitchen), this facade remains above it, giving a hint of what used to go on there.
Its Flemish style facade c.1890 of glazed ceramic tiles by Doulton is decorated with the letters O & W either side of the top storey window.
The row of roundels above the first floor windows display grapes, bananas and pineapples.
At the top of the building is the depiction of a 'Southampton hulk', a local form of trading vessel.

Conclusion:- 'O&W are Oakley and Watling, the firm that provided all the fresh fruit and produce for the ships at Southampton docks, including the Titanic.

I give you 2 images, to show you all of the decoration.
THIS link shows a 1910 photograph of the building.

Thanks to those who looked, voted and commented on my previous image.

Looks very beautiful and ornate, Pamela 😃 Two lovely captures here, and interesting history too. Nice to see also what it looked like in 1910 👍🏻

It looks a wonderful building with some of the products it sells in graphic form. This is possibly better for people, who do not speak or read English, to understand what they sell. A very clean Image with lovely details and a good potted history. Another gem discovered, Pamela?
