Bee Orchid (Ophrys apifera)

By teocali
Close-up of a Bee Orchid flower (Ophrys apifera) taken on a warm, sunny day at Belhus Park, Essex, last Spring.

The Bee Orchid appears to have a bumble bee resting at the centre of its flowers. In fact the imitation bee is one of the petals, and occasionally it will fool a male bee into trying to mate with it. When it lands on the flower it gets dusted with pollen, which the bee then transfers to the next orchid it visits.

Many thanks for your support of my last upload - much appreciated, as always Smile

Quite delightful Sylvia. I'm wondering about buying the lens you have used - any thoughts?

A quite fabulous close up of this beautiful and rare flower Sylvia, a real joy to view on a dark winter night. As for the lens I'd highly recommend you buy one if you can afford it, you may be lucky and be able to get one second hand, Ed

Many thanks for pointing it out, Steve Smile Some thieving lowlife decided to nick it, along with my Fly Orchid Sad I suppose, in a twisted way, it could be considered a form of flattery GrinGrinGrin
