The natural beech forests in the Limestone Alps National Park are so exceptional because there are only a few remnants left throughout Europe - 85 % of all original red beech forests have been cut down. In the Limestone Alps National Park and the neighbouring Dürrenstein Wilderness Area, these valuable ancient beech forests and primeval beech forests were designated as Austria's first World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 2017.
