Before and After 2

By pamelajean
Continuing my abstract series.

These Medieval encaustic floor tiles in the Retrochoir at the far end of Winchester Cathedral form part of the largest surviving spread of Medieval decorated floor tiles inside any building in England.

When I first showed a version of them on this site in 2011, I said, “It is fairly obvious that the floor is being restored, but I have yet to find out if the intention is to restore them all, or just to restore some, to reveal their former glory”.
I have since found out that they are original and replica tiles. The replicas by Diana Hall appear bright and shiny compared with the duller originals, but this is how they would once have looked.

I was delighted with the response to my trombone abstract, and with all of those lovely User Awards you so kindly gave.

Pamela.

I do like the 'oldness' of the originals but the restorer has worked hard and done a great job.
