Before the leaves fall

By mrswoolybill
Unlike the British, French and Belgian cemeteries on the Western Front, which use flowers to soften the lines of graves and lift the mood, the German cemeteries have oak trees. To paraphrase Peter Hart of the Imperial War Museum, it is about the stark recognition of tragedy.
Thanks for looking,

It's an unsentimental approach that, for me, makes more sense.

Simple, yet doubt there remembered for their sacrifice too.😥

"I often think it would be really interesting to take all of those who would wage war to the battlefield cemeteries, and say, explain yourself to the dead. Explain yourself to the dead!"

The older I get the more poignant these scenes become. The senseless, criminal waste of so many young lives.
Put the warring politicians in an arena with staves and shoot the last man standing.
Moira thank you for sharing.

Thanks everyone, for some thought-provoking comments, and Nezih thanks for the UA. This is my last Western Front upload from the 2017 visit, I thought I ought to clear the decks before we go back again...
I shall be busy this afternoon, I have photos to work on from last night. Probably the second worst 'evening's entertainment' of my life, but I got some pictures...
(The worst was 45 years ago when we were invited to the grand opening of a German Bierkeller in Newcastle, and realised that the oompa band was playing Nazi songs... That feeling of growing panic, How the hell do we get out of here?)
Anyway, an upload from last night may appear in the fullness of time.

I have to agree with Leo and Peter. I think we are only pawns on the politicians chess board.

For some reason I'm picturing the mom and dad grieving over their lost boys.
