There are quite a few beggars in Venice, most of whom it seems are professionals. I have seen comments by residents relating how they beg, in agony, and shuffle about, but if they are late for the train they go like the clappers.
I’ve seen various men and women with dolorous looks, if they are not bent over like this, as we pass by, and yet they were all as happy as Larry when one day I passed them enjoying their al fresco lunch at a pozzo in the Campo San Geremia.
These people give those genuinely in need a bad name.
