Bench - Abstract

By alistairfarrugia
An abstract of a bench in Msida, Malta. The challenge for the day was to take an abstract and a "normal" image of something or someone. Actually it was my wife's challenge for a photography course she's doing and I applied it to myself.

This is one result - a bench shot in such a way to focus on textures, shapes and composition "rules". The "normal" shot is V2. What do you think? Comments, Crit and Mods welcome.

Love the V1 abstract - beautiful colours, and nicely minimalistic. Is it my eyes, or are the horizontals very slightly off? (And I do mean very ... it's hardly noticeable, but with that many of them, my first thought was that it was fractionally higher on the left side than the right ...)

V1 - coolly off-centre, it suggests rather than shouting. Square could be interesting...

TanyaH, there is indeed a slight tilt, the top part shows it the most, but even after straightening along that top line it transpires that the wood is a bit curved towards the middle part. Straightening it on any of the vertical lines would induce a tilt somewhere else given that this is a bit imperfect in its construction. However, I did have a go at it again and came up with three more variants Wink One is a recreation of V1, edited slightly for a bit more balanced presentation. The others are square crops, one in colour, one in b/w.

Yup, V1 is definitely more balanced now - slightly toned down in colour as well, which I think works better. I'm loving V2 as the colour square crop - adds a whole new feeling, and it's very satisfying. The black and white V3 is very good in terms of shape and tones/textures, but I think now that V2 is my favourite Smile

Your second Mod is what I had in mind, I hadn't noticed that Mods were enabled or I would have been onto the job!
