"Beneath the Birch Bracket"

By RonnieAG
At least I did not have to grovel at ground level for this one as the fungus was 8 feet up on a dead birch. It is the widely recognised Birch Bracket fungus (Piptoporus Betulinus), also known as the Razor Strop fungus as barbers used to sharpen their cut throat razors on tough leathery strips cut from it.
Interestingly. this fungus was found amongst the potions of Otzi, the Iceman, found in 1991 at the edge of a glacier in the Otztal Alps in the Tyrol.
The above fungal growth is a new one this year, now about 4 months old and the 3 sections measure aprox. 2 feet across overall.

My thanks to all who commented on Beneath The Cap........much appreciated.

Ronnie.

Nice one Ron. When fungi are these big I do not know what to do with them (framing and composition wise).

Indeed Mick, although it is probably a lot fresher, tastier and of course much cheaper than those sandwiches!Wink
