Big eyes

By Malfun
Experimenting with off camera flash. The flash head was off to the left with the flash head stuck in a milk bottle and set at 1/4 power. I focused the camera in a dark room by shining a torch light on the cats face to allowing autofocus to focus on the eye. I needed the cat to look to the right to ensure both eyes were lit.

I think it's a lovely portrait, sharp, great eye contact and with good details

Sounds a bit complicated to me, but it worked. A fine cat shot in all respects. Others, look!

Hi Mal, welcome to the Critique Gallery, I think it's your first upload here. You've been on the site for a few years though so I guess you know what we're about...

Thanks for the very detailed description of your set-up, I like the carefully thought-out mix of sophistication and improvisation. The uses one can make of a milk bottle...

The main thing is that it's worked, and the main surprise is that the cat co-operated! They are not the most compliant of sitters.

I like the angle and crop, everything sits very comfortably in the frame, occupies it in the way that cats do occupy a space on their own terms.

Settings all look eminently suitable and sensible. Aperture just right to have the face nicely in focus, soften the background fur. Shutter speed fast enough to freeze even the most vigorous purring.

The one detail that slightly jars for me is that the catchlights are placed differently in the eyes, and that is very easily addressed with the clone tool.

I would also like to add just a tiny bit of brightness and contrast, the fur look a wee bit grubby. I'll be back soon.

I guess you know where modifications appear, under the button below your upload, click on the thumbnail to view.

Youve done a very good job mal, and great use for a milk bottle.

In the RAW post processing, I would increase the colour temp to about 5300, and the exposure, which you did increase, by another +0.5. Reduce blacks to -25, - this improves contrast significantly.

Thats the basis of the mod Ive uploaded, which also has sharpening, and mid tone contrast adjusted in PS.

All the ingredients are there, and Willie's mod really nails it.

Nice cat shot. I agree about the catchlights. Can't quite make my mind up if the cat is looking directly at the viewer? Looks like it is looking slightly to the side.
