Black and White - Love or Hate

By marktc
This is what you get when you take a sunset image, full of wonderful shades of gold and blue and subject it to the ravages of Silver Efex Pro... Personally I love it, I suspect though that like any number of my images recently its won't do terribly well, I know Mrs C has already said to me "why do you do that?.... Its just plain wrong" guess I won't be getting her vote!!! Wink

Thanks for looking

I like this one. I know there will be people complaining about lack of detail and breaking the rule of thirds, but for me it works. It just goes to show two things -
1. Rules don't always work, and
2. taste is a very personal thing.

I hear a lot about silverefex pro. Must give it a go sometime.

hmmm "lack of detail?"...well the sky's very pretty, but feel the darks are just a little too dark (for me) Smile

If you like it that's fine if other people like it then that's a bonus. I will be honest and say that it will not get my vote.

The sky looks great, Mark and positioning the silhouetted church against the lighter patch of sky works well as a composition. But I think the church is too black as well, the backlight doesn't appear strong enough for that depth of silhouette and therefore makes it slightly unnatural. The sky is definitely worth the vote though.

I don't know much about this kind of photography at all Mark, but I think silhouettes don't go down well for some reason. Maybe it is because of the lack of detail. However, it is a moody image and the sky works very well in mono.

In our club there is very strong competition in the mono section.
I love colour (people call me coordinated Kate) but the desire to recapture
the wonderful Black and White images of yesteryear is a challenge for today's digital age.
The Silver Efex Pro seems to help achieve some amazing results.
The sky in this is stunning.
It is difficult to judge when doing a silhouette whether to bring out detail or leave as is.
I expect you know in Photoshop under - Image, Adjustments, the Highlights & Shadows
is excellent for bringing back detail. It has to be used sparingly!
Best of luck to you Mark.

Oooo, nice and moody! For what it's worth Mark, I love it. The sky is superb and full of drama....never be afraid to push those tones Wink

Just a thought....

"A silhouette is the image of a person, an object or scene represented as a solid shape of a single color, usually black, its edges matching the outline of the subject. The interior of a silhouette is basically featureless, and the whole is typically presented on a lighter background, usually white, or none at all."

Silver efex can be unsed in a number of different ways-- lots of filters that can be altered with sliders, etc-- so one can make their own interpertations -- fascinating to play with--

I do like to see color in a sunset--- but here I will vote for your innovation--- Good to try new!

I havent used Silver efex but like what I have seen. I completely agree about breaking the rules particularly when the sky is so interesting and dominant. Its brave to convert an obviously glorious sunset into mono and it works for me as I love mono skies! I think that the tower is too dominant still but its a striling solhouette
