Black Tailed Skimmer 'Perhaps'

By NDODS
Good Morning All...

Firstly I would like to thank you all for you wonderful comments votes, and User Awards following yesterdays upload. I thank Caziwinkles (Carol), DicsPics (Richard), Alsopdigitalart (John), Morpheus1955 (Hugh) and last but not least Michaela_Solway (Michaela) for presenting me with their User Awards.

Todays upload shows a Black Tailed Skimmer, however Ade if you would like to make a positive ID you are most welcomed my friend.

Length: 44-49mm
Females and immatures are pale, yellowish brown with tho bold lines running along the length of the abdomen. The wings have a yellow costa and a very dark brown or black pterostigma.
The males develop a blue pruinescence on the abdomen darkening to the rear with with S8-10 becoming black. Its eyes are very dark green. They fly swift and low, skimming the water surface.
Females retain their colur and markings though they become quite greyish brown with age.

This dragonfly is found at any open water with bare patches along the shore where the patrolling males frequently rest in the sun.

Status & Distribution

Fairly common. Southern England, parts of Wales and Ireland. Increasing its range Northwards.

I hope that you all have a great day ahead, for me who knows.

Regards as always Nathan

COSTA - I go every Friday for lunch with my friend and didn't know it was a word to describe 'a riblike parth as the midrib of a plant leaf' etc.
My friend and I often share new words we've learned over a three hour lunch!
Thank for that Nathan - great macro of your Black Tailed Skimmer.
