Blackening Waxcap (Hygrocybe nigrescens)

By teocali
This sinister looking little character, the Blackening Waxcap (Hygrocybe nigrescens) suddenly popped up in the middle of our lawn, one misty moisty morning. Surprisingly it turns out to be edible, but I don't think I would want to risk it!! It is about 2.5 inches high and I had to prostrate myself for this shot - thank goodness for the flip screen on the Panasonic G2! Please view large if you have a moment.

V2 F4.5 1/320sec -1EV ISO100 handheld
V3 F5.6 1/200sec -1.33EV ISO100 handheld

Many thanks for your C&Cs on my Hawker Hunter upload - really appreciated Smile

Great shot and well worth getting down to it but like you I would not like to consume this little delicacy either.

Very fine specimen Sylvia and great work with the G2 and well done on the gardening and low pov. Exposed to perfection and the inclusion of the water drop always adds that little extra.
Might have tried F8 to increase the dof a bit more as from the shooting distance the dof is so minute and would in clude more detail when a pair and still leave the bg oof

What super specimens to find in your lawn Sylvia. Now that new glass could work wonders on these Wink

I find using manual focus while zoomed into the caps enables me to get the depth of field necessary. By moving around within the screen at high mag you can choose the best aperture for each subject. It took a bit of getting used to on the GF1 but works like a dream...worth a try anyway.

Three wonderful shots Sylvia, like the gloss that it has on all of them from the moisture, so sharp with great colours...brilliant

#1 looks a little over-saturated to me but these are three lovely shots, albeit of a slightly gross-looking 'shroom. Smile #2 looks very shiny so it might have been an idea to use a polarizer to tone down the reflections a little.
