Bleeding heart - Dicentra alba

By Pete
A close up, but not too close of my favourite plant, the Bleeding Heart. This was taken yesterday. I went with a friend to Harlow Carr (RHS gardens in Harrogate) and was disappointed with the floral content ...we seemed to be mid way between blooms. So we ended up back in Sheffield at my old favourite haunt...the Botanical Gardens.

The photograph was taken from the ground handheld at ISO400. I've kept it small in the frame because I sometimes like to give flowers plenty of breathing space...and I think these deserve it. It's placed on the upper right third for a balanced composition.

And with the Map feature I've highlighted the exact spot it was taken...great feature Smile

I can see why it's your favourite Pete. Well controlled on the exposure and comp works well.

Maybe it is my monitor, Pete, but it looks pixelated?
The flower itself is a bit soft too.

Ok I am going to have to check on my other moniter later, but the image looks a bit dull on this one Pete. I would not dream of teaching you to suck eggs but would a play with levels or curves/contrast lift this a bit without burning the white of the flower?

(says the expert here!!..... off I run...)

Interesting and contrasts well, but shouldn't they be red...?

I think I would have been inclined to move slightly to the right or the left in order to avoid the flower being shown right in front of the stem.

I also like this image of Dicentra alba (the white varity of Bleeding Heart) and as an earlier comment says,
Quote:"wonderfully delicate and well balanced composition".
However I tend to agree with jeanie when she says it looks a bit dull, I would have liked to see the white whiter without burning out.

Good point..I try to photograph these head on for the total heart shape so couldn't actually consider the stalk placement. Well I bought a shift lens today, so maybe I could next time Wink

Thanks for the correct name Brian..I'll change the title, and the mod Smile

So what time does the lens start to work, does look a bit flat Pete so sorry i cant consider this for a H/C or P/A.

BTW i have sort it for him so he is all set, you will still be welcome to come on the next one if you like.

Best regards

Like the composition of this Pete but I find my eye being drawn to the stalk above the flower and wondered if it might be worth just blurring the stalk as it goes out of the frame.
I put up a mod in a moment.

Your background is a whole mess of Jpeg artifacts here Pete. You have compressed this down to about 49K, you do know that as an E2 member you are allowed up to 400 don't you.... Yes, I guess you do. Smile

It's one of my favourite flowers too, particularly the white version.

So glad we can see exactly where it was taken, makes all the difference with a shot like this Smile

Simple but well captured image, need a tad more contrast.

You kept the file size very low Pete, not helped with the large version.

Not bad though, could have maybe done with a little more contrast and a droplet of water could have been good as well.

Did you get any shots using your lensbaby on this outing ?
