Blue Jay

By taggart
Blue Jay
Cyanocitta crisstata. 12 inches. male and female appear identical

Large, noisy--the blue jay is a bully-- they will scream like a hawk as they approach a food source--scattering other birds-- Fill their huge bill and fly off to stash it somewhere, return for more and so on.
As they are very fond of peanuts, we give them a handful away from the smaller birds feeders!

Thanks for your attention to the Nuthatch--- Greatly appreciated! Wishing you all warmth and safety-- weather news from the UK is especially cold and/or damp!

I have never seen a Blue Jay, Jenn; I'm surprised to learn from you, it is quite a large bird. The way you describe it, I'm thinking of our Magpies, our noisy delinquents. They even gang up on the cats and harass them, which is handy, because, being fond of cats, we know when one is in the garden. Handy warning system for the other birds too.

Our Stellar jay has similar habits. He has a very loud squwak and uses it to itimidate other birds. Only thing is your jay is more beautiful in colour and pattern. You have this one looking his best as well. TG
Love ya blue jay. Well captured Jenn.

Interesting write up about the habits of this bird, and what a beautifully plumaged bird it is.
Fine shot of it, Jenn. I like how the bird parallels the twig and all set on the diagonal.
